Trataka Meditation Course

4 week course. Trataka is a tantric meditation technique that develops concentration by gazing at an external, and then later at an internal, image. Not only does this technique improve concentration and memory but it also has a profound effect on balancing the nervous system, and can help to relieve symptoms of mild depression, anxiety and insomnia.

This practice falls into the shatkarma group as it is said to purify the head space particularly the frontal lobes of the brain and ajna chakra. It is also a practice of pratyahara and dharana (concentration).Trataka bridges physical practice with mental practice and is an excellent preparatory technique for meditation. With trataka the mind is purified and becomes concentrated on one point. It is an excellent practice to increase concentration and willpower. It helps release nervous tension, anxiety, depression, and will develop all the faculties of the mind, both active and dormant, that deal with perception. In this way our intuitive faculties, visualization skills and memory are developed and improved. Eyesight and defects of physical sight are improved by this practice. It has also been used to help cure insomnia when it is practiced just before bed.

Trataka means ‘to gaze steadily’, and involves either gazing at an external object (known as Bahir Trataka), gazing at an internal object, (Antar Trataka), or a combination of both of these forms. Many different objects can be used for this purpose. In this course we will use a candle flame as the object of concentration. The flame gives the additional benefits of activating manipura chakra.

If you are interested in taking part in the course please contact the centre via phone or email to book your spot!

The price for the Trataka course is R400 and includes a small handout.
